The S. Ellen Jones and East Spring Street Neighborhood Associations are proud to host a Question and Answer Session with the three candidates vying to represent the 3^rd District of New Albany. The candidates are:

Steve Price (D) Incumbent

Maury Goldberg (D) Challenger

Charlie Harshfield (D) Challenger

When: Tuesday, May 1^st – 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Where: S. Ellen Jones Elementary School, 600 East 11^th Street, New Albany, Indiana

(Meeting to take place in the cafeteria)

Format/Agenda:

Each Candidate will have 10 minutes to introduce himself to attendees (30 minutes)

Questions and Answers (60 minutes)

Resident Questions are to be submitted prior to the meeting*

A Moderator will read questions aloud and each candidate will have 3 minutes to respond

Candidate rebuttals of 1 minute will be allowed

CANDIDATE FOR 3^rd DISTRICT COUNCILMAN

PLATFORM

GOAL: Enhance and expand Code Enforcement in all areas, including a Rental Inspection Program.

Action: Do research on other cities successful with code enforcement to find answers applicable to New Albany’s current situation. Utilize the resources and research previously provided by neighborhood forums.

GOAL: Work to maintain Historic Preservation and Revitalization of downtown.

Action: Keep open communication with the New Albany Historic Preservation Commission, and make every effort to participate in available preservation programs.

GOAL: Examine the feasibility of a City Court.

Action: Research other city courts to find answers for New Albany. Utilize the resources and research previously provided by neighborhood forums. Explore budgets and work with the code enforcement department.

GOAL: Promote Neighborhood Associations.

Action: Attend neighborhood meetings as much as possible, especially when invited. Address issues, participate in projects, and promote goings-on throughout the district to other city officials and the media.

GOAL: Study Street Department issues in relation to regular trash/debris pick up and disposal.

Action: Discover exactly what issues/challenges face the Street Department with its ability to adhere to a regular schedule. Work with the department and the budget to eliminate these challenges.

GOAL: Work to make the city of New Albany a more viable, receptive location for businesses, as well as new economic development.

Action: Take a hard look at tax abatements. Should a company apply and be granted a tax abatement, there should be a commitment from the company to give back to the city. Should commitments not be met, there should be consequences. Not only will incoming tax money from these businesses be put to use improving the city, the improvements will draw more business development to our community.

GOAL: Encourage all citizens to communicate their issues and concerns to their council representatives and City Hall. Expect or demand more than the status quo.

Action: By establishing regular town hall meetings, I will be accessible and I will listen to everyone. We are all equal and entitled to be heard. In addition to being reachable by phone and email, I will hold monthly or quarterly district forums.

"It's time for New Albany to reclaim its place in Southern Indiana."

I have been a proud member of this community for 31 years. I chose to move to New Albany from Louisville because of its fine reputation and quality schools. I raised my daughter Charlotte in New Albany and over the years was pleased with the quality of education she received. I still think our schools have much to offer our youth and am committed to ensuring that New Albany’s children continue to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

I own and operate Harshfield & Associate, Inc. offering professional bookkeeping and tax services to individuals and businesses of all kinds. I am currently in my 22^nd year of this endeavor and enjoy working with many individuals and diverse business entities. I have worked in the accounting industry for a total of 39 years.

I am aware of the many issues that the city and its residents face. Therefore, I have decided to take a stand and do my part to help the city regain its place on the map. This stand begins with my run for City Councilman of the 3rd District

Although I have never run for public office, I am active in my community and am the current treasurer of the East Spring Street Neighborhood Association, Inc. and a member of Develop New Albany, a non-profit organization committed to the economic revitalization and historic preservation of Downtown New Albany.
